The right coach is going to hopefully share some of your same values. Though only you can decide the right coach for yourself, it is important that the coach reveal what they value so you can see if they are a good fit for you. This is an example of what I would say to you if you interviewed me:
“The values of character, responsibility, passion for life, grace and transparency are most important to me. I have great passion for seeing young women and all women specifically grow in their lives. I am interested in their whole being: spiritual, physical, and emotional health. My passion is to see captives be released and then set free to serve Jesus, which can be modeled in the coaching relationship through providing grace and truth. Character and responsibility are some of the keys to a good life. I think that the passion portion comes from me being in so many difficult life situations and telling others how I got out, that Jesus saved me, and how He did it, what it took to walk that path and how others served me, washed my feet and set me up again, walked beside me and now to be able to serve others. That all gives me such passion! The values of grace-giving and transparency are both embedded in all of the above. I was given such grace; how can I not give it back myself. Only by being transparent can others know how much Jesus cleaned me up. I want that transparency for those I work with, free to live transparently. I bring these same values to my life coaching profession as this is what drives me, brings me joy and God willing, gives glory back to God at the same time.
What is the most important value to look for when choosing a life coach?
I would say that trust would be that important value. Trust takes a long time to build but only a short time to lose. The coaching relationship is built on trust. Trust always begins with the life coach. The coach must set the tone, set the pace, and be the example. This is where telling stories to the client, showing them some personal examples may help with client openness and help them trust. Most people are afraid to be really honest. A coach will hopefully model honesty, opening the session for the client to be more honest and builds trust in the relationship. It is important that you feel you can trust your coach to be a successful match.
